Project Description

Musicians for Human Rights is an international network of musicians that promotes the strengthening of the culture of human rights and social commitment all over the world. Founded in 2009 by Alessio Allegrini, first solo horn of the Santa Cecilia National Orchestra, and by a group of musicians and human rights activists from all over the world, MFHR encourages musicians of all levels – students, professionals, enthusiasts – and the public at large to become promoters of human rights to positively affect the lives of others.

Together with expert human rights scholars, MFHR creates specific curricula for music conservatories and university masters programs in human rights; participates in advocacy initiatives for the promotion of human rights around the world; trains musicians for the realization of workshops centered on the universal language of music and body expression in places such as refugee camps, reception centers, prisons, where human rights are often a critical issue. In addition to the Human Rights Orchestra, a symphonic conducted by maestro Allegrini, MFHR has also set up the Human Rights Band, an ensemble of eight/ten musicians from different countries with a world music program in which pieces and arrangements belonging to different musical traditions meet and mix to give life to something surprising, new and familiar at the same time.

The Pianoterra Foundation supports MFHR sponsoring some events both in Italy and abroad.
