Project Description
The Sanitansamble Youth Orchestra was founded in 2009 with the support of the L’Altra Napoli Association, which has been involved for years in cultural redevelopment projects in the Rione Sanità. It is inspired by the experience of «El Sistema» implemented in Venezuela by maestro José Antonio Abreu, a free educational model of qualified music education that promotes the collective practice of music as a means of organizing and developing the community in difficult social areas and contexts.
Over the years Sanitansamble has formed two orchestras, divided by age groups, involving over 80 children and young people between the ages of 6 and 22. While “playing together”, the kids had the opportunity to learn to “stay together”, discovering their skills and abilities and communicating in a new way through the language of music.
After producing a documentary on the orchestra’s experience in 2013, the Pianoterra Foundation supported the project from 2014 to 2017, funding it and designing personalized educational paths for the young musicians and community work with their families.
